1.
Haraldr Sigurðarson (anglophone spelling is Harald Hardrada), king of Norway, sets his sights on England after a failed claim on the Danish throne. He and his army board their longships and set sail, their eyes fixed on the British Isles. Sigurðarson plans to bring honor to himself, his namesake, and expand his kingdom further... will he succeed?
2.
The cold winds of autumn have descended upon England, and Sigurðarson's forces march through the countryside, en route towards honor and glory. The weather is harsh, but the promises of what lies ahead keep the spirits of Sigurðarson and his men high.
3.
September 25, 1066. Two armies meet at Stamford Bridge. One of Norsemen led by the mighty Haraldr Sigurðarson, and the other of Anglo-Saxon soldiers led by the honorable Harold the Saxon. Only one may claim the rightful title of King of England, and both are willing to spill any amount of blood in order to claim that title.
4.
An intense battle was fought at Stamford bridge. Haraldr Sigurðarson himself was slain in combat. Victorious, yet weary from the battle, the Saxon forces led by Harold the Saxon march home, unaware of the enemy that approaches...
5.
William I of Normandy; an ambitious noble, has laid claim to the Saxon throne. His army sales across the English channel, and marches towards the Saxon castle, ready to fight to the death so that William's claim is made.
6.
Harold the Saxon is told of an army amassing outside the castle of Hastings! His army quickly mobilizes to defend his title yet again, despite how weary and tired they are from defeating Norwegians at Stamford Bridge. The two armies meet outside of the castle, only one army may claim victory. Who will be the victor?
7.
In a volley of arrow fire in the heat of battle, Harold Godwinson, also known as Harold the Saxon, is slain in battle. William I, formerly known as William the Bastard, is crowned King of Saxonland, now known by his title of William the Conqueror. A new era in British History has begun, and a new dynasty has seized the throne. Long live Saxonland!

about

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Here we are: the product of procrastination and a deep love of my roots.

While putting off working on the next Autumn Brigade album, I decided now was a perfect opportunity to delve into a genre that I love. I've always wanted to make a dungeon synth album, but making music about my dungeons and dragons campaigns seemed like a bit of a trope that has already been done by other dungeon synth artists. Taking inspiration and encouragement from my good pal Poppet, I set out in making music as Huskarl (that's the old Norse spelling of "Housecarl, which is the anglophone way of saying it).

Saxonland is a musical retelling of the year 1066, which was a very important year in Britain. Two important battles took place that year, when Harald Hardrada and his men battled Harold the Saxon at Stamford Bridge, and were defeated. Upon his return home, Harold the Saxon meets William I of Normandy and his army. William the Conqueror has a claim on the English throne, and the two men do battle at Hastings. After defeating Harold the Saxon, William crowns himself King of England, giving birth to the nation in which my family descends from.

Tracks 3 and 6 bear a remarkable resemblance, particularly with the horns and timpani drums. Mostly done to give a sense of intensity, and to signal to the listeners when the battle began. I wanted battle sequences to be as intense as possible, so I felt a rapid tempo of drums and a battle horn would do this justice.

Huskarl is not meant to be some sort of "ethnonationalistic" fantasy of the days of old, rather it is a celebration of my heritage in what I feel is a healthy manner, and a project that represents my love of European history, and medieval battles! I spent a lot of time on this project, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it!
